Background of the Study- Provides a summary of results from the prior empirical research on the topic and identifies the need as defined by the prior research which this current study will address. Keep it simple! 2-3 Paragraphs or 1 Page (Write each in order using bolded as sentence starters. Each number (1), (2), (3) etc. becomes a sentence unless includes +.)
Problem Statement- (1) Begins with, “It is not known how/why and…” (2+) presents summary of results from the prior research; (3+) identifies needs as defined by research; (4) identifies the general population
Purpose of the Study- (1) Begins with declarative statement: “The purpose of this study is….” (same as problem statement exactly); (2) identifies research methodology; (3) identifies the specific research design; (4) describes target population and geographic location, (5+) describes the nature of the phenomena to be explored.
Research Questions- (1) States the research questions, (2+) discussion of how research questions relate to problem statement by research question.
Advancing Scientific Knowledge (1) Identifies the gap or need, (2+) describes how above are defined in literature; (3) identifies theory(ies) or model(s) theoretical foundations or conceptual frameworks, (4+) connects study directly to the theory, (5) describes how study will add or extend the theory or model.
Significance of the Study- (1+) How the proposed research fits within prior research; (2) how it will make an academic research contribution; (3) describes how it makes practical contribution; (3) describes how addressing the problem will add value to the population, community, or society.
Rationale for Methodology- (1) Identifies the specific research methodology; (2) justifies the methodology by discussing why it is the best approach for answering the research question(s) by addressing problem statement
Research Design- (1) Describes the research design; (2) discusses why selected design is best to address the problem statement and research questions as compared to other designs; (3) describes the target population; (3) describes sample for the study; (4) identifies the data collection procedures to collect data on the sample; (5) identifies instruments or sources of data needed to answer the research questions.
Definition of Terms- (1+) Defines any words that may be unknown to a lay person
Assumptions, Limitations, Deliminations- (1+) States assumptions accepted for study, (2+) provides rationale for each assumption; (3+) identifies limitations of research design, (4+) identifies delimitations of research design
Summary and Introduction to Rest of the Study- (1+) Summarizes key points presented in Chapter 1 and (2+) presents overview of remaining chapters
