Introduction

In the US, more than 3.6 million people drop out of high school (Dillon et al. 2003; Mallette, 2012). According to Dillon et al. and Mallette, about 3.6 million American high school graduates have dropped out since the 1980s. Mallette et al. (2010) found that about 7,000 youngsters drop out of school each day, contributing to the economic crisis.

Dropout rates have had negative impacts on students, including drug and alcohol use, early pregnancy, and involvement in the criminal justice system. This study will look into the factors that influence both those who are at risk and those who return to school (Erktin, 2010; Sollitto, 2011).

The background of the study, problem statement, and research questions will all be covered in Chapter 1. A justification for the approach and an explanation of how the study will contribute to scientific understanding will also be included. The nature of the study, terminology definitions, assumptions, limitations, and delimitations will be covered in the conclusion. The first chapter will be summarized. The literature review will be covered in Chapter 2.
